In 2015, 3 years after Hurricane Sandy hit the New Jersey and New York coastlines, Compass 82 became aware of the systemic underpayment of disaster claims by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

In an unprecedented move by FEMA, policyholders were permitted to request a review of their claims.
Knowing that most homeowners would not have the knowledge needed to pursue more funds on their own, C82 designed and implemented a unique program to provide clients with insights, tools, and advocacy to seek a fair and just insurance payout.

Partnering with an experienced, certified claims examiner, C82 reviewed flood insurance payouts made by NFIP and identified items overlooked or underpaid.

To assist our clients with correcting these underpayments, C82 participated in Third-Party Neutral Reviews. These hearings were overseen by arbitration judges, taking place over a 15-month period, resulted in 330 client claims being amended at a collective payout of $6.5 million.

The American Red Cross provided the necessary financial support for Compass 82’s innovative NFIP project which allowed clients to recoup much needed additional dollars without losing any proceeds to attorney or public adjuster fees. This simultaneously relieved the burden on government and non-profit agencies to attempt and fill project gaps.
