EDUCATING survivors and communities on practical ways to fast-track sustainable recoveries

Compass 82 Executive Director, Susan Marticek, educates survivors on Disaster Fog™ at a workshop in Jacksonville, Florida.

During the chaotic time that follows a disaster, impacted residents enter a maze of disjointed and complicated resources and applications. Without insight or direction as to how their involvement in one program impacts their eligibility in another, residents can quickly be thrown off track and decrease their chances at a complete and timely recovery.

Education is the bedrock from which good decisions are made. Without accurate and timely information, disaster survivors are left in the dark to make choices. The consequences of these decisions can have major implications for their ability to recover.

In the early days and weeks following a disaster, Compass 82’s mission is to educate and empower disaster survivors by providing them with a straightforward plan to:

  • Properly document home and personal property damage
  • Track disaster-related expenses
  • Maximize local, state and federal resources
  • Protect their interests when signing contracts

Compass 82 additionally provides educational workshops, partnerships, and mentoring to local nonprofits, community leaders, and businesses to share our lessons learned and best practices for a community-wide recovery:

  • Educate community leaders on establishing a collaborative network that includes government agencies, nonprofit and faith-based organizations, and local businesses.
  • Assist Long Term Recovery Groups and Disaster Case Management agencies in the development and implementation of their programs and materials.
  • Strategize the coordination of funds from insurance companies, FEMA, non-profits, and federal grants such as CDBG-DR.
